Students

Students come from all over the world and can
vary considerably in age (18 -71so far) and
experience. This adds to the special atmosphere
in the workshop, which is friendly and
supportive. We are still in touch with most of
them |

Malcolm Vaughan had eighteen months full-time
training in the workshops of David Charlesworth
and David Savage at Bideford, followed by two
years working for David Savage on a series of
major commissions. He set up his own business in
1988 |
|

|
John Elbert won a first prize with this
beautiful display cabinet in ripple ash. It is
included in ' The Technique of Furniture
making ' by Ernest Joyce. John, an escapee
from the oil industry, now runs his own workshop
employing four people in Wandsworth |

Sam
Dalton, a young college-leaver who having
acquired the skills that resulted in the
production of a dressing-table mirror that sold
for £1800, was working full-time for a furniture
maker and has now set up his own business in
Prague. |

|
|
Keiko Hinachi, a young woman from Japan who came
here because she was unable to find this
flexible type of training at home. She used her
portfolio of work to gain entry to Chatham
College where she studied design. |

|
|

Dirk Lange, who achieved his ambition to study
with James Krenov at the School of the Redwoods
in California after a year with David.
He has now set up a successful workshop near
Krefeld, undertaking commissions here in England
and Germany. This allows him to visit Hartland,
his favourite beach, his favourite dog Ruan (and
us) most years.

In
1998 two prizes were won in the GMC furniture
competition. Bob Chapman, a retired civil
engineer, won first prize in the amateur class
with this Bible box in Tiger oak.
He
seems to win a prize most years now! |

|

David Timby, a civil engineer, won third prize
with his first piece. His Shaker style bedside
table in American cherry, has yew cockbeads and
drawer pull with cedar of Lebanon drawer
linings. He is now saving up for his own
workshop. |
