Alan Peters Book
I am delighted to note that Alan Peters' book
Cabinetmaking The Professional Approach is due to be republished in the autumn this year at about £20.

NB I have edited this page in the light of more up to date information from Jake, see comments below. Thank you Jake.

Aparrently it is being updated by Betty Norbury.

I have found it disgraceful that the work of one of our most prominent makers should have been unobtainable for so long, and am glad that the position is being rectified.

There was much training, grant and government agency loan and college information, which needed bringing up to date.

For me it is the notes on techniques and the development of his designs over the years which are the most interesting parts of the book, but it also give invaluable advice to anyone considering setting up as a designer maker.

The publishers are Stobart and Son Ltd.,
67-73 Worship Street,
London EC2A 2EL

That's really good news! I've looked for this book used and it was pretty pricey.

Mike,

Yes, I had heard of some astronomical prices.

I do like using this book as a reference for design discussion.

Alan joined the Devon Guild of Craftsmen in the year when I finished my training with Ted Baly, one of the founder members.

Was lucky enough to see much of his work at the Guild summer exhibitions over the next 25 years or so. The work was always immaculate.

best wishes,
David

Jake,

Thank you very much for that information which is more accurate than mine!

I think it is an excellent thing that Alan's book is finally being republished.

I might be tempted on this one, but I have the original. So I shall have to see what I might miss, if I don't add this to my shelf.

Alan Peters; truly one of the greats in the field and the book is not to be missed, old or new.

Regards

John

David,
Is there any news on the publication of Alan Peters book? I have recently attempted to buy it here in the USA but no one seems to knw that it is about to be released in reprint and updated form. The question is "has it been released in the UK yet?"

David,
A visit to their website suggests that Stobart Davies are reprinting this classic work, The say available in October 2008.

I would contact them to enquire about availability in the states.

best wishes,

David
